Baby Dahlia by Susan Bailey

October 2026 - Baby Dahlia

About the Image(s)

Dahlias are one of my favorites and this early morning bud was dripping with dew! The shallow depth of field kept the background nicely blurred and soft.

This was taken with my Olympus OM1 Mk11 with an Olympus 90mm macro lens. ISO 320, 1/320, @ f/5.0.

Hi Susan: Nice composition with the flower leaning to the right, then the leaves add a good point of interest.

Image seems a little too bright, I would post process this picture more and reduce the exposure. A polarizing filter would have worked well to remove the bright sheen from the leaves. There are also tools in post processing that will accomplish the same task.   Posted: 10/08/2026 03:15:19

This is a good composition. The background is well blurred. The water(dew) drops give a special touch to the photo. However, it seems that the image is somewhat bright. this is apparent on the leaves. As Murphy mentioned, the use of a polarizing filter or post processing could have solved the problem.   Posted: 10/15/2026 17:21:55

I like the composition for the above mentioned reasons. The drops and sharpness of the bulb and petals are nice. It is well done.
The leaf in the button is "upside down" and less "classic", it is Nature (everything is not aligned). Just a personal reflection.   Posted: 10/16/2026 10:58:04

For me this is a nice exercise in composition. I like how the single bud sticks up by itself to bring attention to it, and then for a story it has me thinking "what will it look like when it opens". Isolating the bud with its supporting leaf and then having a blurred background works very well in my opinion. Nice job.   Posted: 10/26/2026 15:09:14
