Cyno Longwings Mating by Mervyn Hurwitz

October 2026 - Cyno Longwings Mating

About the Image(s)

This was taken in the mountain regions of Panama.
Although in the middle of the day, it was totally overcast which created a natural soft box effect.

Sony A7 205mm, ISO 640, f8, 1/320 secs. Manual exposure.
Very little in post apart from cropping and sharpening with Topaz Photo AI.

Nice colors. I've never seen butterflies mating. Very sharp.   Posted: 10/05/2026 16:21:38

Mervyn,
Lovely image of this pair of butterflies. The contrast in the wing colors and the white boarders are captivating.   Posted: 10/08/2026 16:07:38

An interesting & timely capture. The upper butterfly- I don't know if it's possible but it would be nice to see a sharper/clearer definition of her proboscis & front legs from the background.   Posted: 10/10/2026 04:09:57

Thanks for your suggestion, Diane. Interesting that the legs appear to stand out on my monitor.   Posted: 10/12/2026 15:36:55

Lovely picture. In the wild you take what you get. :-)   Posted: 10/13/2026 13:16:40

Hi Mervyn,
Nicely done. Having the 2 butterflies in the same plane is great for a sharp image throughout. Cloudy days are the best for soft light.
I totally agree with Jaswant: In the wild you take what you get!
No suggestion for improvement.
A keeper.   Posted: 10/16/2026 15:38:36

This is an amazing photo. The balance between the two subjects is just prefect. I agree with Diane that the lack of definition in the upper right butterfly's proboscis would be something nice to improve if possible but I am unsure if that is possible when the image is color. Maybe if it was in black and white those two areas could have stronger definition. Great photo!   Posted: 10/16/2026 15:53:34
