About the Image(s)

I took it in Amsterdam with my new Sony Alpha 1 camera.
The memorials noted in the image are called Stolpersteine, often translated as “stumbling stones” or “stumbling blocks.”
They are small brass plaques, about 10 cm square, set into the pavement in front of the last freely chosen home of people persecuted and murdered by the Nazis.

I thought monochrome was appropriate.

What a fun shadow image. The textures and direction of the shadow make for a play photo. Nicely done.   Posted: 10/02/2026 22:41:02

This is an interesting image. The textures of the stones against the "stumbling blocks" make for an engaging image.
Then the shadow of person against both creates an intriguing image. A good choice to use black and white.

The composition and exposure of this image are wonderful! The combination of B&W Monochrome and the angle of the silhouetted shadow give it an artistic feel reminiscent of an Alfred Hitchcock film or something else from the film noir era of the '40s and '50s.

The focus feels a touch too soft to my eye and it feels consistently so throughout the depth of field leading me to believe it isn't caused by a very wide aperture. It leaves me wanting more detail in at least one of the stumbling stones... I can tell there is writing on them but none of it is legible.   Posted: 10/11/2026 22:38:29

Alec, those stones are amazing and meaningful, though I understand Germany isn't putting more of them out. Nice you found them in Amsterdam. Great angle and shadow covering part of the stones as it gives a more melancholy feel. I didn't realize there was writing until I looked closer. It would be nicer to read a few of the stone. I keep looking at the shot and imagine trying to compose it… you did a nice job.   Posted: 10/19/2026 01:34:03

The monochrome works great. And the diagonal shadow is a nice touch - a 'shadow' over memorials.   Posted: 10/26/2026 20:32:06
