Ethereal Capture by James Cagle

October 2026 - Ethereal Capture

About the Image(s)

I have no color image as it is mono out of camera. This image was made while photographing my stepdaughter’s wedding, where I served as a supplemental photographer alongside the primary shooters. I used the opportunity to experiment with infrared capture. The frame was taken with a Nikon D750 full??‘spectrum conversion fitted with an 850?mm IR filter, producing the distinctive tonal shift and foliage glow characteristic of deep??‘IR. Exposure settings were 35?mm, 1/500 sec, f/4, ISO 200. Although the image shows a few technical challenges inherent to IR work, the surreal rendering added an effect I found visually compelling..

Hello James; congratulations on you stepdaughter's wedding!
I've always wanted to experiment with IR photography, the B&W images produced have an ethereal quality. I hope to see more of your IR images.
For this type of subject I think an 8x10 crop works well, much of the foreground and background can go so we focus on the couple.
All in all a beautiful image, of a happy occasion; very nice work.   Posted: 10/09/2026 16:06:28

A lovely photo of the happy couple. Infrared was an interesting choice. It seemed to work well except, for me, the dress blends in too well with the grass. I would try to darken the grass some. Also, I would suggest cloning out the white structure on the left.   Posted: 10/11/2026 18:01:05

James, yes congratulations! A lovely shot - I like the way they are posed together (always a challenge with wedding photos, I think). Infrared which, in this case, has lightened the background trees, seems to soften what might be quite harsh light. I like Charles' crop although I find the bottom just a tad tight. The white structure on the left doesn't particularly draw my eye - cloning it out might be tricky and cropping from that side would crop off the train of her dress, so I would leave it in.   Posted: 10/13/2026 02:39:31

Lovely natural pose James.... well done....infra red makes for a novel approach and achieves a pleasant soft tone across the image
