Salsify by Morrie Carter

October 2026 - Salsify

About the Image(s)

This is a Salsify which is like a large Dandelion. I was out trying to find some wildlife and saw this and took a quick shot. When I looked at the photo on the computer it was much more interesting than I thought it would be. The photo was taken at 420mm, F8, ISO 2500 and a shutter of 1/1600

Morrie,
What an interesting plant! I love the medium gray background. It really shows off the plants. This is a study in colors and shapes. I like the green versus yellow/orange. I wish the seed pod had more seeds on it. I think I might clone out the one vertical orange shaft in the center right. It is blurry, while the rest of the plans are sharp.   Posted: 10/16/2026 21:22:29

Thank you for the suggestion and comment. I did not even see the blurred out piece. I like your suggestion.

I was commenting to myself how I liked this photo and how everything was sharp and then I noticed the single out of focus blurry stem on the left. You might consider cropping out the right third of the photo turning this into a vertical. I really like the yellow, orange and green against the grey background. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 10/23/2026 16:35:51

Great suggestions and I played with a crop and it was good. For some reason I selected this version of the photo. I did not even see the burred out stem. Great suggestiong and it would make for a stronger image if removed.

I like the simplicity of this image, even though there are a lot of stems and leaves. The gray background really makes the subject pop. I like that the salsify is so sharp. I agree that the single out of focus stem could be a bit distracting.   Posted: 10/23/2026 18:47:08

Thank you for the comment and I agree the out of focus stem should have been removed. I overlooked it.

I like the monotone background which contrasted nicely with the dandelion and stems.I agree with others to crop out the rt. side of the image because of some of the out focus stems.Besides creating a vertical format,I would crop out the bright leaves in the foreground across the bottom of the image or reduce the highlights.I think the bright foreground tends to compete with the dandelions.   Posted: 10/26/2026 06:29:42
