Building on the Mount by Don Hill

October 2026 - Building on the Mount

About the Image(s)

I was in San Francisco and saw a building that sort of looked like the backend (or Stern) of a Cruise Ship. Behind it was a cool blue building that looked like it was sitting on the Cruise Ship. I was looking for something sort of Surreal. I have been playing around with ON-1 Raw Editor and decided to see what it could do. I wanted the image to sort of look cold and maybe futuristic. So, this is not supposed to look like a normal building. I borrowed an idea from Julie and decided to leave the slight backward tilt of the blue building. Thank you Julie.

Image was captured with my Nikon z with a 45mm lens at ISO 100, 1/125 sec @ f-11. I also used ON-1 no-noise AI to sharpen.

Hi Don, this absolutely does look like a building on a cruise ship! Since there's so little variety in colors, maybe it would look good in monochrome. Or if you want it to look really surreal, you could use some Lightroom presets to add in some crazy wild colors.   Posted: 10/05/2026 17:04:20

Hey Janice. I tried it in black and white and did not like. I do not use Lightroom but have Nik. I will try Vienza. Thanks for the suggestion.   Posted: 10/05/2026 18:42:11

Hi Don - interesting shot with lots of interesting lines and shapes. I can see the cruise ship too. It feels almost art deco with the scale and the shapes and all of the lines made me wonder what it would like posterized. If you have Photoshop it is something you can explore as an Adjustment Layer. The attached was set the layer up as an overlay, no color, 63% opacity.   Posted: 10/05/2026 19:29:33

Good shot, lots of impact. My only suggestion would be to crop off some (maybe just two) of the lines at the bottom which are a bit over-powering for me.   Posted: 10/20/2026 10:40:35

Interesting shot Don. It certainly does look like the stern of a ship growing a building. I would try cropping it to a square to see what it looked like with fewer lines at the bottom. I think the stripes in the cloudy sky adds to the image. Thank you for thinking of me when you took the image!   Posted: 10/20/2026 11:49:34

Hi, Don. Good catch to see this! The clouds give me a sense of movement, which goes along well with the look of a ship.   Posted: 10/20/2026 14:47:04
