October 2026 - Sunrise On Jkyl Island

About the Image(s)

Dec 2021 after delivering a project, a client directed me to the island as a good photo spot. What a lovely surprise ! At sunrise I was up and ready with a tripod at the scene. I usually click very little but this morning was an exception.
Camera Nikon D810A with a 24-120mm zoom lens @f11; iso 200; S 1/250 ; Aperture priority

Truly my happy place. Beautiful sunrise photo. Love the orange and purple colors of sunrise. The silhouetted driftwood works well, emphasizing the shape. I wonder how people feel about not including the ends of the limbs of the tree--I'll want to hear thoughts on that. Nice reflection as well.   Posted: 10/06/2026 18:08:51

There is an old saying about cropping that I often remember. "When cropping don't use a clipper, use a chain saw." The whole idea is either crop of something massive and just the tips. Most of the time that works out pretty well.   Posted: 10/13/2026 16:59:36

Right time of day, right exposure. I like the composition with the trees framing the sun. To Tracy's question, I don't have an issue with cropping off the limbs of the tree since it is more of the branch rather than the tips. It does appear to my eye there are artifacts or evidence of postprocessing around the tree on the right.   Posted: 10/07/2026 15:20:25

Two things strike my eye immediate. In no particular order they are the lovely use of the complimentary colors of blue and orange and the other is the simplicity of the scene. There is really nothing there but the image still speaks quite loudly. That voice is likely the result of the contrast between the background and the black silhouettes. Regardless of what it is it has worked quite well and this is powerful image.   Posted: 10/13/2026 17:04:14
