Blyth East Pier by John Gilkerson, MPSA

October 2026 - Blyth East Pier

About the Image(s)

Image made June 8th at Blyth in Northumberland

Although Blyth is on the east coast, the river meets the North Sea at an angle so the piers are named East and West rather than North and South. The image was made from the West Pier.

Hi John
Having lived around the coast all my life I know the strength of the sea and structures like this are important to protect harbour areas from the ravages of storms.

Great textures on the stonework, love the way the walkway on the pier graduates up along the walkway and leads to the lighthouse the most prominent point of the image, and very nicely composed.   Posted: 10/11/2026 09:39:36

Hi John: Another subject some would walk right past. I like the textures and shapes on the pier as well. Your horizon line is straight which is a plus for your composition. Nicely exposed with nice tonal values.   Posted: 10/12/2026 17:25:21

Hi, John! Oh, how I love photos of lighthouses! They're captivating! Maybe I'd add a bit more contrast and sharpness.   Posted: 10/20/2026 18:52:59

A strong image John, very well done. Great detail in the lighthouse, wall and formwork. Your use of the lighting at the time is good. A great overall image.   Posted: 10/22/2026 21:38:14

Hello John. I also enjoy light houses. Nice composition and balance with this image. The structure detail is interesting and leads right to the light house. The sky looks a little strange to me. Maybe you have strange skies over there. Nice image.   Posted: 10/25/2026 15:01:56
