Light Through Decay by Jill Attaway

October 2026 - Light Through Decay

About the Image(s)

"Light Through Decay" taken in the Driftless area of Wisconsin. Throughout the midwest, there are a lot of abandoned and/or dilapidated barns.

I used my Canon 5D Mark IV with my 24-70 lens: 26 mm, 250 ISO, F/22, 1/40 second exposure.

Nice image Jill. The barn looks like it's ready to collapse at anytime and is a nice contrast to the tree that stands secure. The sunburst showing through the space between the boards is a good effect but it might be a slightly too much. In that you used f/22 I assume this was natural rather than added in post, yes?   Posted: 10/13/2026 15:14:53

Thanks for the feedback, Richard and yes, as a consequence of shooting at F22, the starburst effect was done in camera and not in post processing.   Posted: 10/18/2026 20:34:16

Hi JILL
I would have liked a wider shot showing more barn also the sunburst is a little too strong .

Thanks for the feedback Norman. As you and Richard noted, I should reduce the brightness of the starburst effect.

I do have a wider angle lens...but was not using it on that particular day. :)   Posted: 10/18/2026 20:35:22

Good capture but I would also like a wider angle and reduced starburst. Like the texture of the wood.   Posted: 10/18/2026 23:05:06

Beautiful decaying barn, looking ready to collapse. I like the fall leaves showing in the window. Great composition with the included tree, The fall colors add to the interest. I won't repeat any of the other comments, though I agree with them.   Posted: 10/20/2026 11:10:19
